Parking Break Not Set, Truck Rolls and Kills Waste Worker
On December 12, 2012, Employee #1, a 55-year-old male with Waste Management of M innesota Inc, was working with a coworker and was working with a garbage truck, picking up garbage on a rural township road. They stopped between two customers' homes and both got out to load garbage from both sides of the road. Employee #1 walked to the front of the truck and the coworker walked to the back. The parki ng brake was not set on the truck. When the coworker got to the back of the truc k he realized the truck was rolling forward. He yelled for Employee #1 and ran t o get back in the truck. When the coworker got to the driver's door the truck ha d stopped rolling. He found Employee #1 under the front bumper of the truck. Emp loyee #1 was killed in the event. One serious citation was issued for not settin g the parking brake.
